Our History
Founded in 1982 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Heart of the Nation, a ministry of Santa Fe Communications, recognized the need for quality Catholic television programming in the United States. Heart of the Nation produced and syndicated weekly half-hour programs from its Los Angeles, California production facilities through the 1980’s.
In addition, Heart of the Nation has broadcast the Sunday TV Mass in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, uninterrupted, since 1984. In 2010, the decision was made to end the twenty year reliance on the Passionist service, and to allow Heart of the Nation to locally produce the Mass it airs, better serving the viewers.
Heart of the Nation’s Sunday TV Mass can be found in these locations:
- Houston, Texas on KPXB, channel 49 at 9:00 a.m.
- Dallas, Texas and Fort Worth, Texas on KFWD, channel 52 at 9:00 a.m.
- Los Angeles, California on KDOC, channel 56 at 9:00 a.m.
- San Diego, California on XDTV, channel 13 at 9:30 a.m.
- Sacramento, California on KSPX, channel 29 at 9:30 a.m.
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin on WCGV, channel 24 at 9:00 a.m.
Heart of the Nation’s mission and purpose is to serve the spiritual needs of homebound and disabled Catholics through the broadcast of the Sunday TV Mass. Heart of the Nation fosters a sense of community and connection with the body of Christ by creating a “television parish” for its homebound viewers.
We provide, without charge, Sunday missals and Catholic sacramentals (holy cards, holy water, etc...) to homebound Catholics who do not have access to these spiritual resources. In addition, our viewers are encouraged to send Heart of the Nation their prayer requests which are placed on the altar during the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass.
Finally, we encourage our viewers to contact their local parishes if they are in need of the Sacraments, especially Holy Communion and we offer our assistance to make that contact where appropriate.
The people Heart of the Nation serves include the homebound, the hospitalized, those recuperating at home, the imprisoned, and any Catholic unable to attend Sunday Mass at their local parish due to their personal situation.
In the words of one of our viewers:
I just caught your Mass...here in Houston. Please send me more information as I’d like to become involved with your organization. I will be watching you every Sunday and I am so grateful to have my Mass on television as I am homebound and disabled and unable to attend church on my own. God Bless You for the Mass. It is very spiritually uplifting to me.
- Michael (Houston, Texas)
