People speculated about Jesus, wondering if an ancient prophet or John the Baptist had come back to life. Peter got it right when he called Jesus “the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” The Lord, in turn, gave Peter the keys to heaven. Key elements of hope in everlasting life include Church teaching, forgiveness, and communion with the Church and God. The Gospels offer some practical ways to seek holiness: Pray the Lord’s Prayer, know that God has provided signs of His love, and do more than obey the Commandments. Jesus encouraged people to ask and have faith that the Father will grant anything leading to eternal life with Him. When God seems to ignore us, do we persist in praying for the same thing or ask ourselves if God might have a better idea?
