In the Old Testament, Job did not understand why he lost his work animals, his herd of sheep, and even his children, but his faith stood up. Introduced to Jesus for the first time, Nathanael realized that the Lord already knew him and knew the doubts he had expressed to Philip by a fig tree. Before following Jesus, one person wanted to bury his deceased father, and another just wanted to say good-bye to his family. Jesus’ responses seemed harsh but revealed that He knows everything that holds us back. Seventy-two disciples sent in advance to places that Jesus planned to visit enthusiastically reported back to Him on what they had accomplished in His name. When we wonder if we have what it takes to do God’s will, do we pray like a small child ready for anything or one hiding fearfully under the covers?
